More news of rising positivity in Canada has come in the form of statistics from a range of official sources both within and outside the country in the past year. Several more examples came to light in a recent presentation by Dr John Cowhig, a teacher of Transcendental Meditation, illustrating how the growing popularity of the technique across the country is being reflected in increasing coherence in the national consciousness.

Dr Cowhig cited statistics that seem to illustrate quality of life more fully than limited economic measures such as Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

For example, a recent report from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), an international organization helping governments address economic, social, and governance challenges of a globalized economy, showed that Canada has the highest proportion of adults with a college education among all the OECD countries. Fifty-one per cent of Canada's eligible population has post-secondary degrees. That is five per cent higher than the next country, Dr Cowhig said, and twenty per cent higher than the average of the major seven countries in the OECD. The next highest country on this measure of education is Israel, followed by Japan, the United States, and New Zealand.

In addition, major Canadian cities Vancouver, Toronto, and Ottawa are regularly voted as the world's most livable and safest cities.

Other cited statistics included a Bank of Montreal (BMO) survey that found that 79 per cent of Canadians had made a charitable donation in the last 12 months. Statistics Canada estimates that 13.3 million Canadians, nearly half of all Canadians over the age of 15, regularly volunteered their time in 2010. This means that Canadians devoted over 2 billion hours to volunteer work.

'That is the equivalent of 1.1 million full-time jobs,' Dr Cowhig said.

The United Nations released a new ranking of countries called the World Happiness Index. The top five countries in terms of happiness are Denmark, Finland, Norway, the Netherlands, and Canada.
