This year, 2011, lovers of peace around the world celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's programmes in Africa, marking the fifty-year anniversary of his first visit to the continent.

Maharishi first visited Africa on 23 August 1961. He arrived in Nairobi, Kenya during the first of many world tours, to realize his plan to spiritually regenerate the whole world.

Once there, he praised the atmosphere of all possibilities and freedom. He quickly instructed two hundred leading citizens, including doctors, lawyers, and business people, in the practice of Transcendental Meditation.

He also established Africa's first centre of the Spiritual Regeneration Movement, the first organization he founded to teach the Transcendental Meditation Programme, which he had inaugurated in 1957 in India. According to Dr Chris Crowell, Minister of Religion and Culture for the Global Country of World Peace, this centre 'would be a lighthouse for Africa'.

The programmes Maharishi presented to Africa included knowledge of how to create coherence and peace in society, how to achieve good health through prevention-oriented health care, how to use Consciousness-Based Education to unfold the inner genius of every child, and how to create an ideal society.

Such programmes are currently offered in sixteen countries across the continent. The next three to four years will see that number rise as more teachers of the Transcendental Meditation Programme are trained, Dr Crowell said.

In the last few years alone, thirty new teachers of Transcendental Meditation have begun offering Maharishi's Total Knowledge-based programmes and spreading coherence across Africa. Many countries, such as Togo, Senegal, and Egypt, now have their own active teachers and organizations.

In addition, new projects are underway in Kenya and Uganda with many students learning to practise Transcendental Meditation as part of their schooling.

These projects contribute towards developing African unity while maintaining cultural integrity in each nation, Dr Crowell commented, and represent the fulfilment of many of Maharishi's goals for Africa.
