Germany celebrates 50-year anniversary of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's first visit

Germany has begun celebrating the 50-year anniversary of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's first visit to the country in 1960. Maharishi's programmes have been blossoming in Germany since that time, and now efforts are underway to consolidate those programmes through the building of a Maharishi Tower of Invincibility.

Speaking on Maharishi Global Family Chat,* Dr Eckhart Stein, eminent professor of quantum physics and Maharishi's Vedic Science, reflected on the history of Maharishi's programmes and the Global Country of World Peace organization in Germany.

Maharishi first came to Germany in 1960, after visiting other European countries. He began a tour of Germany on 12 September of that year, starting in Bonn, the nation's former capital. From there, he visited nine German cities, including Munich, Hamburg, and Dusseldorf.

In all those cities, he laid the seeds for the growth of his programmes for all areas of society. The fruits of these seeds can be seen, for example, in the Maharishi Peace Palace in Hannover, and the first European Meditation Academy in Bremen, Germany.

Maharishi returned to Bonn on 22 October 1960, where he held the first Congress for members of his Transcendental Meditation organization, with 80 participants from throughout the country.

On 31 December 1960 in Munich, Maharishi taught the Transcendental Meditation Programme to 400 people in one day.

Maharishi returned again and again to Germany between 1960 and 1975, when he visited the Munich Olympic stadium. 'Already at that time, in the 1970s, people were practising Transcendental Meditation at a prison in Bavaria,' commented Dr Stein.

'In reflecting on the achievements of Maharishi and the Global Country of World Peace over the last 50 years in Germany,' said Dr Stein, 'we understand more clearly what Maharishi meant, when he said that the main goal for Germany today is to consolidate the programmes which have already been established.' A good sign of this consolidation, he said, is the construction of a Maharishi Tower of Invincibility, which will soon be taking place in Germany. 'This is a good day to begin celebrating the 50-year mark of Maharishi's influence in Germany,' Dr Stein said in closing.
