The latest volume of scientific research published on Transcendental Meditation and the Transcendental Meditation Sidhi Programme covers a wide range of results showing the effectiveness of the practice, from improved heart health to decreased war violence.

In Volume 7 of Scientific Research on Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi Program: Collected Papers, said Dr Michael Dillbeck, International Research Professor at Maharishi University of Management and editor of the volume, the studies were mainly conducted between 1997 and 2005. There are 81 fully reprinted studies from 115 different authors and 50 different universities.

Some select findings from these studies include:

Reduced high blood pressure and atherosclerosis
∙ Reduced physician expenses and mortality
Improved intellectual functioning and behaviour of students
∙ Growth of uniquely high levels of self-development
∙ Increased brain integration—growth of cosmic consciousness*
∙ Reduced stress and increased leadership in business
∙ Long-term reduced recidivism in prisoners
∙ Decreased crime, war violence, and international conflict

All the studies are reprinted fully, so the original findings, data, and charts can be perused or shown to anyone. Dr Dillbeck added that knowing of the research makes most people confident in Transcendental Meditation.

The current volume contains four main sections: Physiology; Psychology; Sociology; and Theoretical and Review Papers.

In Physiology, there are three subsections: metabolic, biochemical, and cardiovascular changes; changes in EEG (electroencephalography); and benefits for health.

The two subsections in Psychology are intelligence, learning, and academic performance; and development of personality.

Sociology contains subsections on rehabilitation and on productivity and quality of life.

The final section, Theoretical and Review Papers, describes the theoretical basis of all these studies and reprints studies that consisted of reviewing existing research, compiling it, and evaluating it for strength of findings and accuracy.

An example of a review study is the new American Heart Association study that recommended Transcendental Meditation as the only meditation technique shown to improve heart health. In this study, which is too recent to be included in the current published volume, scientists looked through dozens of studies, evaluated the quality of work, and then formed a conclusion.

Said Dr Dillbeck, 'When [AHA scientists] looked at meditation and relaxation, that whole category, they said the only evidence for an effect from meditation or relaxation are the studies on Transcendental Meditation.'

* One of the higher states of consciousness (beyond the three familiar states of waking, dreaming, and sleeping) that develop naturally through the regular practice of Transcendental Meditation, described by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Founder of the Transcendental Meditation programme, in his Vedic Science.
