Cooperation among nations

In May, more countries cooperated with other nations on trade, investments, human rights, energy, development, diplomatic relations, and the environment. They also came to each other's aid, most notably to Japan. The United States, Russia, Canada, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and Iceland also agreed to coordinate Arctic search-and-rescue missions.

The easing of visa restrictions was discussed by the United States with both Bulgaria and Poland. The US also eased some travel restrictions to Cuba, re-established relations with Turkmenistan, and sent top officials to Myanmar and North Korea.

Thailand and Cambodia reopened a border crossing between countries, while Egypt reopened the Gaza Strip's Rafah border crossing. Egypt and Ethiopia opened themselves to new Nile discussions.  

Pakistan and India vowed to find an amicable settlement to a border dispute over a river estuary.

Britain's Queen Elizabeth made a historic trip to Ireland, which showed mending of past relations, while US President Obama made a journey there to reconnect with his family's roots.
