Speaking at the global celebration of Guru Purnima by the Global Country of World Peace in MERU, Holland, which took place during the last two weeks in July, Raja John Konhaus, Raja of Japan, explained Maharishi's teaching about the mechanics of transformation and how this knowledge has transformed agriculture and every discipline into a supreme science of life.

Dr Bevan Morris, Prime Minister of the Global Country of World Peace, introduced Raja Konhaus, who is the founder of the Maharishi Vedic Organic Agriculture Institute, and who deeply impressed Maharishi Mahesh Yogi with his profound understanding of Maharishi Vedic Organic Agriculture in terms of Total Knowledge, the totality of Maharishi's Vedic Science.

Raja Konhaus said that since our theme this year at Guru Purnima has been the appreciation of Maharishi and his knowledge—the greatest transforming force the world has ever known—he thought 'it would be enjoyable as my gift to Maharishi to express and appreciate the transforming mechanics that Maharishi has given us to transform the whole world.

'How is it that Maharishi was able to bring us from a state of igorance to a state of enlightenment?' Raja Konhaus said. 'And how is it that he is transforming our nations from suffering to invincibility? We all know in truth that it is Maharishi himself, from his own Being, who has transformed the entire world, and with his knowledge he has transformed every discipline into a supreme science of life.'

Raja Konhaus showed a slide of 'one of Maharishi's favourite visual expressions', which shows the most fundamental transformation in Nature, the transformation of diversity converging into Unity and then re-emerging into diversity under the influence of Unity. 'Maharishi has applied these simple mechanics—diversity-Unity-diversity—to every area of our lives,' Raja Konhaus continued.

'The most common example for us is the process of Transcendental Meditation itself: the mind converges to the Transcendent and then re-emerges refreshed, revitalized, and unified. This is the effect of exposing the diversified mind to the unity of the transcendental field.

'So Transcendental Meditation is our most powerful and most fundamental of all Nature's transformations and of the transformations that Maharishi has given us. But over the last few years Maharishi has pointed out the importance of experiencing all three aspects of this transformation—convergence, Unity, and re-emergence.

'With the introduction of the Transcendental Meditation Sidhi Programme, the emphasis also came on experiencing the mechanics of emergence—how a thought emerges. And most recently Maharishi has emphasized the direct experience of the fine details of how a thought emerges. He said we need to experience how a Sutra [verse or aphorism from the Vedic Literature] emerges from consciousness, how silence becomes dynamism.'

Raja Konhaus said that it is interesting that over the years, Maharishi was able to explain this process or mechanics of transformation so simply from two verses of the Bhagavad-Gita and three expressions from the Yoga Sutra [both are branches of the Vedic Literature]. 'These are the most familiar expressions to all of us.'

Raja Konhaus quoted Chapter 2, Verse 45, of the Bhagavad-Gita:

Traigunya-vishaya Veda nistrai-gunyo bhav-Arjuna
nirdvandvo nitya-sattva-stho niryoga-kshema atmavan

Paraphrasing Maharishi's translation* of this verse, Raja Konhaus said that this verse 'says we should just let the awareness be without the three Gunas**; let it settle down, and then remain established in the Self.

'Then Verse 48 says: Yoga-stah kuru-karmani.' Again commenting on Maharishi's translation, Raja Konhaus said, 'Established in Unity, re-emerge into action, but keep the influence of that Unity in our action.

'These are the exact mechanics of diversity, Unity, and diversity,' he said.

Raja Konhaus then referred to 'Maharishi's favourite three verses' from the Yoga Sutra***, explaining how they also express these mechanics of transformation:

Yogash chitta-vritti-nirodhah
'Yoga is the settling down, the convergence of the mind,' Raja Konhaus said.

Tada drashtuh swarupe avasthanam
'The seer abides in Unity, the unified level of life.'

Vritti-sarupyam itah atra
'The mind then re-emerges saturated with Unity.'

'So in these verses, from the experiential level and the theoretical level, we see the perfect expression of the mechanics that Maharishi has given us,' said Raja Konhaus.

Global Good News will feature Part II of Raja Konhaus's talk in the coming days.

** Commenting on this verse, Maharishi explains that the entire creation consists of the interplay of the three Gunas, the forces that constitute life in the relative field of activity, and which carry out the process of evolution.

*** Maharishi has translated these verses as:
- 'Yoga is the least excited state of mind.'
- 'In the state of Unity Consciousness, the seer, or the seeing quality of consciousness, is established with reference to itself.'
- 'Tendencies (of the observer) emerge from here (the self-referral, transcendental state of consciousness) and remain here (the self-referral transcendental state of consciousness).'
